chile pies & ice cream

this weekend we got to feature one of our favorite places in san francisco:
we first discovered this place last year with friends, and then this weekend when my
parents were in town we had the chance to come back and review it for the blog!
we got to try the dinner menu, as well as some pies + pie shakes of course.
i had no idea they had such a great, unique dinner menu. the pie shakes are famous, but the savory items are just as good. the owner trevor logan opened green chile kitchen as a restaurant first & then opened this smaller chile pies right down on the corner. we are fans!
one of the highlights was this kale/quinoa salad. it was so fresh with amazing flavor.
the chile cornbread was hard to beat too. this was a perfect starter.
even the guys were fans of the salad!
then, the famous homemade chicken pot pie with green chiles in it.
it was really flavorful with a unique kick...plus, homemade, amazing crust {the best part!}
always fun to have parents in town, we're glad they could join us.
of course we tried the famous frito pie...served in a frito chips bag!
don't let the bag deceive you-this is not junk food! this was chase's favorite.
then..on to the most important part, in my book...the sweets.
the pie shakes are what they are known for, but you can also just get a warm slice of pie with ice cream on the side. that's what my dad did, and he said the bittersweet chocolate ice cream was "the best ice cream he has ever had in his life." direct quote people!
we had some different pies, and of course a pie shake.
it might sound different, but it's one of the best desserts i've had!
they hand mix the shakes, so they are still thick and have great texture.
{think of the best ice cream with pie mixed through...+ parts of the crust, etc. yum!}
don't just take our word for it!
thanks to lauren for working with us to set this up, and for letting us sample so much of the menu! we had a great time and love the laid back environment of this place..plus the amazing food.
if you live in the bay or are visiting soon, add this to your list!
..or, see it on our guide to san francisco here.
and to give you one last feel for chile pies, watch the short little clip below:
thanks to chile pies for sponsoring this post!

bring your parents to work day

guess who's in town?
these cute parents of mine. nothing is better than when they visit!
notice my mom wearing chase's noogler hat, my dad wearing a giants hat, AND they have their
welcome gift of a famous san francisco its-it ice cream cookie sandwich...already off to the best start!

we've done a lot this weekend, but we'll start with the day they arrived.
it felt like bring-your-parents-to-work day, because they visited both of us at our jobs:
me in my teach for america classroom, and chase at google.
it made our work days waaaay better to have them visiting!
my dad was the guest speaker in my classroom, they LOVED him just like all kids do.
he is the best speaker i know, so they were being so quiet and listening perfectly...
i wish he would come teach my class more often!
mom and dad + a few of my students! it made me so happy to have my
parents meeting the cute students i work with every day.
then, it was on to google headquarters to meet chase at his office
for lunch, some g-bike riding, and a tour of the entire campus.
lunch + froyo...and no place to pay!
checking out the grand canyon on google earth
it was such a perfect day, so we took the bikes out on the shoreline
and rode around the SF bay trail right by the ocean. pure happiness!
then my mom immediately downloaded google chrome
to replace her internet browser, haha
we took a little break at the google golf stop
then a quick stop at the google bowling alley...
and of course some ping pong. i think by this point my mom and dad were ready to
turn in their applications to google and move out here with us!
we loved showing them where we work.
we are so lucky to have such meaningful jobs
even if chase's does have a few more perks than mine :)

cannon beach, oregon

and, that's a wrap! this is the  l a s t  post from filming our travel show. whew!
that was a lot! if you missed any, see all of them here. it was quite the
experience to film a reality travel show {getting away together, airing on PBS
later this fall...} but most of all, we just LOVED being able to gather with friends
who we never get to see, meet somewhere fun, and have a week of adventure and vacation.
thank you to the show for letting us invite two of our closest couple friends!
we loved reuniting and we all got so close with the crew on the show too. miss you all!
here are some last pictures. i will be sure to post the link to the show when it airs
(no matter how embarrassing it ends up being! :)
our favorite director! we love you, jerbear!
some of the crew...thanks to joan for organizing so much and making sure we
were taken care of, and thanks to brian for putting everything together in
cannon beach! we loved cindy and patti, as well as the cameramen,
sound technicians, and everyone else who was part of it!
the final night we let lanterns off into the sky,
it was magical! great way to end the trip.
goodbye for now, cannon beach! we'll be back!
