favorite travel quotes

i love travel, and i love quotes. obviously i love travel quotes.

trying to decide if an expensive trip is worth it...
because they remind me that travel is the one thing
you buy that makes you richer. now go travel through these!

"though we travel the world over to find the beautiful, we must carry it with us or we would find it not."
-ralph waldo emerson

“twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. so throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. catch the trade winds in your sails. explore. dream. discover.
- mark twain

“travel is more than the seeing of sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.”
-miriam beard

"the air you smell, the sights you see, the food you taste, the language you hear, and the feeling you get...nothing familiar. that is true freedom."

"of the gladdest moments in human life, me thinks, is the departure upon a distant journey into unknown lands. shaking off with one mighty effort the fetters of habit, the leaden weight of routine, the cloak of many cares and the slavery of home, one feels more happy. the blood flows with the fast circulation of childhood, and the journey appeals to imagination, to memory, and to hope."
-sir richard burton

I hope you see things that stop you.
I hope you feel things that you never felt before.
I hope you meet people with a different point of view.
I hope you live a life that you’re proud of.

"one doesn't discover new lands without consenting to lose sight of the shore..."

"wake up and live." -bob marley

"is not this the true romantic feeling-- not to desire to escape life, but to prevent life from escaping you?" -thomas wolfe

"this is what travel is about. we strain to renew our capacity to wonder, to surprise ourselves into astonishment again."

"i have learned this strange thing, too, about travel: one may return to a place and, quite unexpectedly, meet oneself still lingering there from the last time." -henry bevington

explore & taste & imagine.

“traveling is a brutality. it forces you to trust strangers and to lose sight of all that familiar comfort of home and friends. you are constantly off balance. nothing is yours except the essential things – air, sleep, dreams, the sea, the sky – all things tending towards the eternal or what we imagine of it.”
-cesare pavese

  1. I love love quotes- I am full of regret that I am not joining my dive friends on a 2 week trip to Egypt in May ($$$) but I figured it isn't the safest place and I will just have to go later in life! But I loved your intro. Good thing to remind myself when the next expensive trip rolls around!

    1. It's safe if you use a tour guide. I used contiki back in Nov 2011. Get in debt and do it! You won't regret it. I fulfilled my childhood dream :)

  2. Great quotes. The St.Augustine one resonates. There are people who travel/explore and those who dream of travelling/exploring, but cannot due to personal circumstances. I get both of those. What I do not understand is people who have the means to travel, but choose not to because they have no interest in it.

  5. Love the Mark Twain and Zachary Scott quotes. I always say now that my daughter won't remember when she's older that mommy and daddy took a few trips on their own, but we'll remember if we didn't go.
